As a candidate, President Donald Trump railed against the outsourcing of American jobs, using Carrier in Indianapolis as his prime example. The company has announced it will fire 632 workers by midsummer at the company’s Indianapolis factory and outsource the work to Mexico. The BCTGM joins with the AFL-CIO and the entire labor movement to demand that the president use renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement to level the playing field for American workers.

High Wages and Standards! The renegotiation of NAFTA should prioritize protecting American jobs and raising wages and standards across North America.

Open the Process! Rewriting NAFTA could easily backfire on working people if done the wrong way, which is why it should be an open process and workers should have a seat at the table.

Respect Workers! Any fair-trade deal must respect the right of workers to negotiate with employers. Today, America’s workers are being forced to compete against their counterparts in Mexico, who can’t safely speak out for themselves and earn the lowest pay in the world.

Eliminate Corporate Privilege! NAFTA gives corporations special courts to get around laws on health and safety, which is just one of many perks enjoyed by wealthy interests under our current trade policies.
