While the vast majority of companies that employ BCTGM members have enacted new emergency policies to protect the health and welfare of its workers during the Coronavirus pandemic, a few have not.

One such company is the Sara Lee Frozen Bakery in Traverse City, Michigan. Owned by the $7.5 billion private equity firm Kohlberg and Company, management has not offered any added protections or incentives to workers who have continued to work as part of the nationโ€™s essential food industry.

The BCTGM condemns the announcement that the bakery will shut down next week, resuming operations on Monday, April 13. Workers will NOT be paid during the shutdown and will be forced to choose between taking unpaid leave or requesting to use available vacation days.

In a notice posted in the plant, management states, โ€œThis week will not be covered for anyone under the COVID-19 leave policy.โ€

Other BCTGM employers that have shut down due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, are compensating workers for a minimum of 14 days.
