| Today,
working men and women in America have lost a basic right. When workers
try to form unions to improve their lives and win workplace justice, employers
respond with campaigns of intimidation, coercion and retaliation. Federal
law fails to address this injustice. Its gotten so bad that three
times more workers want unionssome 42 millionthan have unions,
according to research by economist Richard Freeman and political scientist
Joel Rogers.
Working families and their allies are mobilizing to help workers regain the basic human right to form unions and bargain collectively. Between June 28 and July 4, union members plan to celebrate Independence Day with a National Workplace Week of Action.
Union activists will distribute worksite fliers comparing the presidential candidates positions on workers freedom to form unions and bargain collectively. Union members and activists will send postcards urging President George W. Bush to change his mind and support the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), which would clear many of the unfair obstacles workers face when they try to join together in unions. During the week of action, union members will mobilize in communities
to convince more members of Congress to support the EFCA. They also
will press for state and local resolutions and proclamations to demonstrate
support among elected leaders for the Employee Free Choice Act.
