The BCTGM International Scholarship Program awards ten (10) $1,000 one-time awards each year. The competition is open to members of the BCTGM and to the children of members, all of whom must meet the eligibility requirements established by the General Executive Board as well as the Rules and Procedures which the GEB has also approved. At least one of the ten scholarships is designated for a Canadian and up to three of the ten are designated for members of the BCTGM. The International Union will deposit a one-time sum of $1,000 for each scholarship winner with the accredited college, recognized technical or vocational post-secondary school at which the award winner registered and is attending. Eligibility for Competition An applicant must be either: • a member of the BCTGM in good standing, or • the son, daughter, stepchild or legally adopted child of a BCTGM member in good standing, or • the child of a deceased person who had at least five years of membership, or • any member or child of a member who has retired from the industry under the rules of the B&C Union and Industry Pension Fund, of a recognized local union retirement program or a retired member of the former Tobacco Workers International Union or a retired member of the former American Federation of Grain Millers. Such retirees are considered in good standing, or • office employees or children of those office employees employed at the International Union office—excluding those holding staff positions. In addition, applicants must be either: • high school students planning to enter college, or a recognized technical or vocational post-secondary school for the first time following their graduation during 2008, or • high school graduates who have never attended college or a recognized technical or vocational school, or • MEMBERS ONLY who have never applied to our program previously and who are currently enrolled or planning to commence or resume studies in the fall of 2008.
NOTE: Members who win scholarship awards and those members whose children have won BCTGM Scholarship awards must maintain their good standing. Failure to do so will result in the surrender of the scholarship grant
•All applicants are required to take the SAT (The Admissions Testing Program examination of the College Entrance Examination Board), or a recognized equivalent, such as the ACT, as soon as possible. Test results should be received by the BCTGM Scholarship Program Office no later than March 31, 2008. •Those taking the Admissions Testing Program examination should list the Code Number of the BCTGM International Union Scholarship Program on their test registration form so that the BCTGM Scholarship Program will receive test reports promptly. The BCTGM Scholarship Code Number for the SAT is 0404. If you have already taken the SAT or ACT, you should request your school to forward your scores to the BCTGM International Union Scholarship Program. •Applicants, members or children of members, who have already graduated from high school but who have not begun to pursue a college education should contact the BCTGM International Union Scholarship Program Office for further information on this test.
Canadian applicants should comply with the test requirements in regions or provinces where the tests are available.
•to applicants who do not intend to work without interruption for a bachelor’s degree or to achieve graduation from a recognized vocational school; •to members’ children who are attending or have already attended college; •to graduate students (except members); •to spouses of members; •to grandchildren of members. Procedures 1. Each applicant must file an official BCTGM International Union Scholarship Program Application form obtainable from the Local Union or through the International Union Scholarship Program Office. 2. The BCTGM Local Union Financial Secretary must endorse this one-page application form indicating that the member or parent of an applicant is in good standing. This must be done before the application is sent to the Scholarship Program Office. All endorsed APPLICATIONS must be RECEIVED at the
International Union Headquartersno later than JANUARY 31, 2008. a. PERSONAL PROFILE—To be completed by the applicant. b. ACADEMIC REPORT—Each applicant is responsible for having an Academic Report completed by the high school (or college, if a member). The report should reflect the first semester grades for the senior year (or most recent academic performance, if a member). BCTGM should receive this report no later than March 31, 2008. All records and information received shall remain confidential. c. ESSAY—Your essay may be submitted in French or English. Each contestant is required to write an essay of not less than 250-500 words on one of the following subjects:

Selection of Scholarship Recipients A Board of Judges, composed of educators selected from universities and other higher education institutions, shall choose the winners based upon their judgment of the scholastic records of the contestants, the quality of the essays submitted, and the replies contained in the Personal Profile. The U.S. judges shall select the most qualified U. S. applicants. Judging of the Canadian applications will be conducted in Canada by a bilingual judge. Up to three of those selected may be members of the BCTGM. At least one of those selected must be a Canadian. The decisions of the Board of Judges shall be final. Announcement of the winners will be made during the month of May. Upon being notified that a Scholarship Award has been granted, the winner shall immediately notify the BCTGM International Union Scholarship Program to which school the winner has been accepted for proper handling of the one-time scholarship award.
