Cuts to federal inspections are leading to disabling injuries and deaths

OTTAWA–The Public Service Alliance of Canada is demanding that the Harper government take action to prevent workplace injuries and fatalities, after a damning report revealed that it has been negligent in protecting workers under its jurisdiction.

Labour movement commemorates 50th anniversary of Hogg’s Hollow disaster

(TORONTO) -- In 1960, the horrific deaths of five Italian immigrant workers who died while constructing a tunnel produced such public outrage, mobilizations in the Italian community, and massive union organizing that health and safety laws were forever changed.

On March 4, 2010, the federal government will table a Budget that is widely expected to place a high priority on cutting the deficit through spending cuts, not on job creation. While temporary stimulus measures already in place are likely to continue, these will soon expire.

With the economic crisis still very much with us, the CLC has called on the government to address three key issues—jobs, Employment Insurance, and pensions.

Food sector is now manufacturing's biggest employer

The food manufacturing industry is now the largest employer in the manufacturing sector.

In November, Statistics Canada reported there were 222,300 employees in food manufacturing, compared with 159,100 in transportation equipment.

The gap between food and transportation equipment manufacturing has increased since the peak of payroll employment in October 2008.
