An Economy that Works for All

Why is the Economic Situation for Working families the Way it is?

For a generation, working families in the U.S. and Canada have been losing ground. The social contract that prevailed after World War II allowed the real incomes of working Americans and Canadians to rise and their families to achieve middle income status. But, beginning in the 1970's, the corporate elites turned their backs on that contract and the income of working families began a steady decline. The corporations launched a vicious assault on the right to organize unions that continues to this day and has led to reduced union membership.

The passage of first the Free Trade Agreement with Canada, the NAFTA and the WTO treaties in the 1990s extended that economic model to all of North America and made the world's workers available to exploitation by the corporate elite. The result has been more than thirty years of declining incomes and increasing inequality and insecurity for working families.
