BCTGM Retirees Among Thousands Expected at Columbus, Ohio Rally to Preserve Pensions

Thousands of pensioners and their families expected July 12 to call on Congress to fix America’s Pension Crisis

COLUMBUS – Thousands of retirees fighting to preserve their pensions will rally on the grounds of the Ohio Statehouse, Thursday, July 12.

BCTGM members from throughout the U.S. will join together with coal miners, truck drivers, steel workers and other pensioners who stand to their promised retirement income if the Joint Select Committee on the Solvency of Multiemployer Pension Plans fails to come up with a fix to preserve pension plans.

The following day, July 13, the Joint Select Committee will hold its only scheduled field hearing at the Ohio Statehouse.  The committee is charged with coming up with a plan by the end of November to end the multi-employer pension crisis. While the committee meets inside, the crowd will gather outside the Statehouse to hear testimony from retirees who depend on their pensions to survive. BCTGM retirees have been invited to speak.

Scheduled speakers include:

  • David B. Durkee, BCTGM International President
  • Cecil E. Roberts, United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) International President
  • James P. Hoffa, International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), General President
  • Sara Nelson,  Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, President
  • Tim Burga, Ohio AFL-CIO President

You can tune in and watch the event live streamed here.

The events will all take place on the grounds of the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus. The first rally will take place on Thursday, July 12 at 11 a.m. On Friday, July 13, retirees and supporters will gather outside the Statehouse at 1:30 p.m.
