Mondelēz Announcement to Shut Bakeries Draws Criticism, Outrage

The February 4 announcement by Mondelēz International that it would close bakeries in Fairlawn, N.J. (Local 719) and Atlanta, Ga. (Local 42) has been met with widespread criticism and outrage. BCTGM International President Anthony Shelton released this statement noting,

“The BCTGM strongly believes that BCTGM unionized employees are the most productive and efficient workers in North America. Mondelēz is taking a very short-sighted action in an effort to generate corporate profits while devastating communities and families through the closure of these bakeries.”

U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5), in a 2/8/21 statement said,

“I am extremely disappointed by Mondelez’s decision to close their Fair Lawn facility, leaving the community and 600 families in the lurch. These hardworking men and women literally just put their lives on the line during the pandemic, never missing a day so that Mondelez could meet the skyrocketing demand for their products. It’s unfortunate that the company didn’t consider the offer we presented to help them stay and rebuild their iconic facility and remain in the community. We will all miss the smell of the fresh-baked Oreos and other cookies that has wafted through Fair Lawn for the past six decades.”

New Jersey State Senator Joseph Lagana, Assemblywoman Lisa Swain, and Assemblyman Chris Tully released a statement condemning the planned closure of the Fairlawn bakery saying,

“We are saddened that, despite the efforts of local, state and federal leaders, employees, and the community at large, Mondelēz International has announced they will close their iconic Fair Lawn plant after more than 60 years of operation.” Read the full statement here.

Fairlawn Mayor Kurt Peluso reflected on the impending closure saying,

“It’s really sad news. It’s really sad news. Nabisco has been a big part of Fair Lawn. We’re disappointed to see it go and we feel horrible for all the employees.”

In Atlanta, where the Mondelēz /Nabisco bakery has employed workers making its iconic snacks for nearly 80 years, the news was equally devastating. In this FOX 5 Atlanta article, BCTGM Local 42 Business Manager David Cooper says,

“In 2016, they cut 600 jobs in Chicago and sent them to Mexico. The reason they say they need to close is they can’t grow. They have 46 acres over there. They definitely have room to expand. That is just an excuse. If you go to the store and look at the products and read the labels on Nabisco products, it says ‘Mexico.’”
